A.M. Ortega Construction, Inc. employed RTL Equipment and Traffic Control to provide traffic control service on a recent project we completed for San Diego Gas and Electric Company. The project, known as TL 663, included more than 3 miles of trenching for the installation of new underground facilities in the Kearny Mesa area, extending from the County of San Diego Superior Court Building on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. east to I-15, and south along Murphy Canyon Road to the terminal of the roadway. This 10 month night project provided unique challenges for the traffic control service, including multiple spreads extending across several signalized intersections, deconfliction of work with other contractors in the area, close scrutiny by the client and regulatory agencies for adherence to both the letter of the plans and the most effective methods for conditions, and the ever-present challenge of performing operant traffic control (flagging) to change multi-lane roads to single, one way reversing roads at night. Throughout all of this, RTL’s professional staff and field workers performed above expectations, keeping our workers safe and productive and the motoring public moving efficiently through our work areas. Their Manager, Dan Chiaramonte, attended weekly meetings with us and SDG&E assuring RTL was in the loop and on top of every issue that arose or change in schedule. We will be excited to again have their services/equipment on our next difficult traffic project.
